Two Pernicious Popular Ideas

In Uncategorized on May 24, 2011 at 4:11 am

I’m sick of the popular nebulous doctrine of the equality, or near equality, of the value of different persons’ life experiences.

Few people explicitly hold the doctrine, but often come close, and proceed as though it were true.

This is connected with another, perhaps even more pernicious popular idea: the idea that, while there may be inequalities since some people have really awful lives, there is a kind of ceiling which most people get pretty close to. No one can have a really charmed life – that’s too fairy tailish, that’s unrealistic.

I think that’s a load of shit which people tell themselves to make themselves happier in their complacence or in their unfortunateness.

There are people who have very charmed lives, full of goodness. They don’t all “come crashing down”.

Realizing and affirming this is very good and heartening.
